One would assume that a piece of literature is the same in both Kindles and printed books. If it is the same story, why wouldn’t it be? Digital readers are discovering the hard way; there is a vast difference between digital e-readers and the ever-reliable printed book.
One woman, Christine Marfice, decided to try using a Kindle. At first she noticed minor mistakes in the e-reader version; a comma missing, an extra space where it did not belong, an incorrect spelling, but then she noticed bigger issues. Entire sentences were missing, pages gone. Marfice could not even finish the story because of all the errors.
Giving up, she decided to go buy the print versions. “…the small errors I encountered in the spelling and punctuation of the novel soon made it too annoying to read. I resigned myself to a trip to Barnes and Noble to buy hard copies of the texts on my reading list.”
Dismal experiences with Kindles, mixed with their replacement over print, can lead one to seriously question how students are supposed to learn a story properly. If a Kindle is filled with errors and missing pages of information, readers will quickly admit defeat and never finish the story just as Marfice did. Even if readers endure the difficult digital reading, the information they retain will be skewed and inaccurate from the original printed version. Why waste time reading a story version filled with mistakes and errors?
Also, by accepting story version with mistakes, we are lowering the standards of literature and degrading classic novels. We should strive to improve stories and knowledge, not settle for mistakes and faulty technological devices.
